The Pangburn Discord had an excellent conversation on morality today (4/12/21). The question was for everyone to state their moral foundation in the simplest and clearest terms possible. Here are the ones we heard. Comment below with your opinions on these and add your own moral foundation! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Western morality based on individualism with allowance for exceptions
Optimizing freedom and flourishing of myself then others (and violating those opportunities for others only to prevent violation of my own)
‘Maximizing well-being for self and those around you’ boils down to causing the least suffering
Following instructions given by God (via all forms of revelation)
Morality is the interaction between two agents
All things are good so you should work to create more, differentiate more, and help/encourage others to do the same
We intuit conscious data systems as having inherent value and transgressing them is wrong relative to their level of lucidity
Trying not to violate another person’s consent (given the person has sufficient information to discern)
In each case, accounting for well-being and minimization of suffering for oneself, those around you, the extended environment, and the world at large (in that order)
Conventional morality comprised of unavoidable input from the world, with an ideal of maximizing avoidance of interference/interaction with others to minimize the chances of moral wrong
Evolution drives us to acting for the betterment of our species (including ourselves and those around us) according to what is pragmatic
Understanding self and the surrounding world so one may empower others to do the same and make meaningful contributions to their life
Self and civilization should have an understanding for mutual benefit (moving toward centrism) Maximizing well-being for myself and those around me and, subsequently, is it consistent with the law of the land; assumes that life is preferable to death and health is preferable to sickness Adhering to deontology; flourishing the desires of oneself and human beings based on interaction
Acting as if I was a person worthy of the sacrifices of my ancestors, and the gratitude of my descendants.
